Art brut and Jean Dubuffet

Art brut is a French term that translates as 'raw art', invented by the French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art by non-professional artists. It is an art that focus on the immediate and spontaneous, rather than intellectual concerns.

Jean Dubuffet Villa sur la route [Villa by the Road] 1957

I see it as art where the viewer is invited to  approach an art piece in a bodily and emotional way instead of the analytical way. An art that speaks to our memory through a sensory perception.
I can see it being linked the philosophical term 'Phenomenology' - described by the french philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty in this quote:

'We know not through our intellect but through our experience.'

Installation 'Submerged' by Anne Gammelgaard

Jean Dubuffet was a painter, sculptor and graphic artist. He combined his talents in one of my favorite pieces 'The Closerie Falbala' from 1973.

It is a huge installation made of concrete and epoxy resin. The big-scale piece invites the viewer into a somehow confusing black- and white world. It stands in contrast to the green grass and threes that surrounds it. The installation is placed in PĂ©rigny-sur-Yerres in France and can be defined as Land-art.

An art that relates itself to its placement outside of the gallery and museum institutions.
An art that you can approach without a cultural education.

An art that is for everyone.
